| | Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects - 19th Century - From Various Consignors | | Click on the image to enlarge | | Lot 1 Extremely rare antique Baccarat faceted hollow "Ducks-on-a-Pond" paperweight. This hollow blown weight of clear glass encases three small ducks at its center, two facing one direction and a third in the opposite direction. The body of each duck is beige with striped feathers in red and violet, each with red bills and red eyes. They swim over a clear star-cut ground, with a narrow ring of green and white jasper depicting a grassy bank surrounding the pond, all resting on a clear glass foot. A top circular facet and six side circular facets serve as small magical portals through which to view the ducks always swimming lazily, undisturbed. See: Glass Paperweights of the New York Historical Society, p. 88, color plate 70; " Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows," p. 103, image 80. " As commercial products, (this classic era of) paperweights represented the best that could be turned out in quantity at low cost. Considered in this light, the high quality of most French and many American paperweights is almost beyond belief. It indicates an inventive enthusiasm and a technical know-how combined in a way that would not be possible today - that, in fact, was not possible at any other time in history." --Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society. Diameter 3 1/4" $18,000-$25,000

A trumpet-shaped, ribbed white convolvulus, with a ring of canary yellow and pink around the rim. An additional blue ring drapes over the white petals. The flower blooms on a curved green stem, as it overlaps a single dark green leaf, on a delicate, double-swirl white latticinio basket. Unlike most of the Victorian paperweight flowers, the convolvulus was strictly a Clichy creation, except for one extremely rare example from the Saint Louis factory. Derived from the Latin convolvere, to roll together or roll up, the convolvulus is actually an interchangeable term for morning glory, with trumpet-shaped flowers and heart-shaped, spear-like leaves. There are twenty-three documented examples of this type of weight. Scratch to dome, cullet in lace. Diameter 2 3/4" $30,000-$40,000
| Click on the image to enlarge | | Lot 3 Rare antique Baccarat faceted four-flower bouquet paperweight. The flowers grow from entwined green stems, along with a yellow bud and several green leaves, over clear star-cut ground. Six and one facets. " These rare [camomile] flowers are obviously something special" --Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. " In 1848, the introduction of lampwork added significantly to Baccarat's already versatile use of millefiori canes as decorative and identifying devices. Star and arrow canes center many flower types; the arrows were sometimes also used for lower pansy petals (as illustrated here) and for stylized arrangements..." --Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute of Chicago Diameter 3 3/16" $15,000-$20,000
