Caithness Glass, established in 1960, is a creative
leader in the field of glass paperweights. The success of this
Scottish factory may be attributed primarily to the work of the
artistic genius Colin Terris. In 1966, Terris began work at Caithness
Glass as an engraver. While Terris appreciated the beauty of
traditional paperweights (especially those of mentor, Paul Ysart,
with whom he worked at the factory), he felt driven to explore
new ways of expressing himself in glass.
"From the first day I became involved with hot glass,
I was facinated by its ability to give the feeling of movement,
color and clarity," says Terris. "For me, paperweights
have never been meant for preventing papers being blown by a
breeze-- paperweights are dreams caught in crystal."
