A serene white rose has several layers of overlapping petals, carefully sheathing a yellow center and haloed by bright green sepals that peer shyly from behind the bloom. A companion bud sprouts next to the rose, still cradled by a cage of green sepals, amidst a crown of three leaves in varied shades of green. Gathered stems support the delightful bloom, flanked by two more leaves. Opaque red ground. “Wherever they were made they are Victorian workmanship at its best.” —Paul Hollister, Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society. Boldly-colored complex millefiori, some whole and some partial, include a wonderful selection of silhouettes from the glass house, including of running rabbits, horses, bees, an eagle and perhaps a few monkeys, and are joined by a wonderful signature/date cane, the iconic mark of the “J Weight”. The delightful selection of millefiori is spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin with bits of colorful filigree. Diameter 3 3/16" $12,000-$16,000

| Click on the image to see alternate angles | | Rare antique Baccarat 1848 spaced millefiori Gridel silhouettes on red and white star carpet ground paperweight. A coral, white and green complex star arrowhead cane adorns the center spaced complex canes in blue, yellow, violet, red and green, in a sea of white cogs with red and violet stars. The canes include the Gridel silhouette canes of two butterflies, a dog, a deer, a horse, a black monkey, a white rooster, a black rooster, a pheasant, a swan and an elephant. Blue and white lace is visible from the underside. Signature/date cane. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” —Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows. A prominent “B 1848" signature/date cane, surrounded by an assortment of spaced complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouettes of a horse, dog, deer, goat, elephant, butterfly and two roosters, one black and one white, dots an unusual carpet ground of bundled aqua honeycomb canes, each with a red, white and green cog cane center. Paul Hollister called these “rich juicy” paperweights. Diameter 2 7/8" $6000-$8000

A coral-rimmed arrowhead cane is surrounded by an assortment of spaced concentric complex millefiori in brilliant shades of red, coral, yellow, purple, green and blue. Spaced amongst the millefiori is the picture cane of a red flower, as well as the Gridel silhouettes of a butterfly, a deer, a dog, a horse, two roosters, a monkey, a swan and an elephant. The canes are nestled in a dense carpet of red-centered white stardust canes, with a white upset muslin interior visible from the underside. Signature/date cane. Pontil scar. A ring of twenty iconic pink and green rose canes is the highlight of six concentric rings of pink, purple, white and green canes, including pastry molds, cogs and six beautiful white roses, which culminate into a single green moss cane with a tiny white floret center. A multitude of assorted complex canes, including three iconic pink and green roses, three uncommon pink and white roses, a very rare purple and white rose, moss canes, pastry molds and cog canes, creates a mushroom tuft that rests on a basket of white staves which is pulled down into a tapered stem. Doily-cut clear ground. Five and one facets. “These weights, while sometimes referred to individually as baskets, bouquets, or nosegays, have, for reasons that are visually obvious, come to be known-somewhat less poetically-as mushrooms.” —Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute of Chicago. A cabbage rose, much less frequent than its rounded “thousand petaled” cousin, has embellished ruffled petals and outer petals that caress the design intimately. The rose sits atop a slender curving stem, flanked by two trios of dark green leaves. Another trio of leaves and then a spaced pair halo the bloom. Star-cut clear ground. “Two types of roses were made by Baccarat. The first is a thousand petaled rose with flat, round outside petals, representing 91% of their roses.
