A magnificent close packed design contains a signature/date cane nestled among a vast array of assorted finely-detailed complex canes, including shamrocks, arrowheads, six-point stars, honeycombs, green leaves, crosses, whorls, trefoils, quatrefoils, cogs, two Gridel pigeon silhouettes and two Gridel lovebirds silhouettes. A ring of diamond cutting encircles the perimeter of the base, where an inner layer of white upset muslin, colored twists and a few millefiori is revealed. “This Baccarat staple is one of the most consistently interesting weight ever made, always revealing something new.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. “Close millefiori refers to the close vertical packing together of the canes, like people in a dense crowd. The patchwork quilt of one hundred or one hundred and fifty canes in a close millefiori paperweight offers a sampling of many or most of the canes made by a factory, and treats the eye to an almost endless variety.” —Glass Paperweights of the New York Historical Society. Five symmetrically placed large strawberries, each cradled within four splayed green sepals, are accompanied by four white strawberry blossoms similarly cradled by their sepals and symmetrically spaced in a network of stems and leaves. A central salmon-pink, blue, green and white arrowhead cane is surrounded by an assortment of complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a dog, a deer, a butterfly, a goat, a pheasant and an articulated rooster, which are scattered on a lush carpet of cobalt blue and white six-point star canes. Four iconic flowers are gathered into a large and lovely bouquet, with scattered leaves and spun stems. The flowers included are a luxurious red rose created with tight upright inner petals and surrounding unfurled petals, a Type II pansy comprised of two large deep purple petals topping three smaller yellow-centered purple petals and a white stardust and green bull’s-eye cane center, a large white double clematis with two tiers of finely veined petals and a red, blue, green and white arrowhead cane center and a small blue and white wallflower with a green, white and red arrowhead center. A cobalt blue and white complex center cane is ringed first by seven pink complex canes with central five-spoke white stars and tiny six-point stars. A ring of blue and white stars complex canes, with white and pink hollow tube cores, follows before an impressive ring of seventeen pink Clichy-type pink and green rose canes. A final ring of light blue and white complex canes garlands the roses. Previously sold in the L.H. Selman Ltd. Winter 2015 57th Auction as lot 7. Diameter 3” $5000-$8000

An iconic pink and green rose cane dots the center of an otherwise blue ruffle millefiori design that consists of a lovely garland with five lobes. Each lobe is spaced by a dark burgundy cane. White upset muslin over parallel latticinio rods on the underside. A carefully positioned round facet appears over each lobe, spaced by long vertical windows, below a top facet. Excellent condition. Five close concentric rings of contrasting complex canes focus on a pink and white floret bundle cane. The design is held in a white and pink stave basket, which is drawn down to a footed clear base. A rare purple and white rose appears in the outer ring of two spaced concentric rings of various millefiori, including cog and ruffle canes, all centering on a central purple and white cog cane. The canes are divided by cables of green and white-striped filigree on a parallel white latticinio rod ground. Good condition. Diameter 2 1/2” $3500-$5000

A network of beautiful pink filament twist segments is arranged in a traditional chequer pattern, its voids filled with colorful and varied complex canes, including a pseudo-rose cane. The pink latticinio design is supported by a cushion of pink upset muslin. “Somewhat rarer are those weights whose separations are gauze cables in sherbet pink, aquamarine, powder blue, and pistachio green.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. The garland surrounds a purple cog cane, encircled by a ring of pink pastry mold canes and a ring of green pastry mold canes. Five moss canes space the voids between the lobes of the garland. Clear.
