A large pink-shaded rose, with tiers of cascading petals, is flanked by two companion buds, each cupped by green sepals and emerging from a sturdy stem, and is crowned by a halo of five dew-studded green leaves. Long pink vertical cylinders rise from a tall cradle of alternating large green leaves and large white petals, the central cylinder caressed by a single yellow stamen, to form a water lily that entirely inhabits a clear dome atop a footed clear base. “This rare weight is one of the most dramatic of all paperweights.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Pictured and discussed on page 130 of Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society. Previously sold in Sotheby’s New York, January 18, 1995 auction, in lot 64. Excellent condition. A pansy flower, with two purple upper petals faded at the tips and three pale yellow lower petals striped and dotted with black, perches atop a stem alongside a drooping purple bud, above a trio of serrated green leaves. Clear ground. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Excellent condition. A green bull’s-eyes and white floret complex cane is closely ringed, first by dark blue complex cogs, then by white and red pastry mold canes and, finally, by green and white pastry mold canes. The design continues with six C-scrolls of various colors, including one of pink and green pseudo rose canes. Each scroll is dotted with a single blue cog cane in its void. White sodden-snow ground. “A unique version of the circular garland motif is found in Clichy “C-scroll” paperweights. These garlands of canes, which are arranged in semi-circles resembling the letter “C”, are considered a signature of the Clichy factory.” —The Art of the Paperweight. A rich assortment of canes, including six-point star, stardust, whorl, arrowhead, leaf, honeycomb, shamrock, trefoil and quatrefoil canes, creates a colorful tightly-packed carpet where silhouette canes of a dog, goat, rooster, deer and hunter meander. A carnation cane and another silhouette of a dog at the perimeter make a surprise appearance in the design. A ball of white upset muslin, with bits of color, is visible between the canes. Date cane. An arrowhead and fortress cane is centered by a ring of pastry mold canes at the heart of two interlaced trefoil garlands, one made of green and white star complex canes and the other of pink and white cogs surrounding a central blue six-point star. Each empty loop is dotted with either an arrowhead and fortress cane or a white and pink star complex cane, in an alternating pattern. White upset muslin cushion ground. Excellent condition. Silhouettes of a dog and a rooster are joined by a picture cane of a flower in a tightly-packed cushion of bundle and complex canes. A ring of pastel pink and green rose canes encircles a central blue complex cog cane at the heart of a slightly cambered mushroom top with three more concentric rings of pastry molds and stardust canes in green, purple, white and pink. An alternating white and blue stave ring holds the top tightly and is pulled downward into a perfectly spaced mushroom stem. Fancy star-cut clear ground. Five and one facets.
