Lot 1
Very rare antique Saint Louis upright bouquet green aventurine encased overlay paperweight.

A delightful flower bouquet has an upright double-tiered purple-striped red flower, with an inner tier of four petals and an outer tier of six petals around an air bubble center that conceals a tiny white cog cane, flanked by a blue and by a white three-petalled companion blossom, in alternation with complex cog cane buds, also in patriotic colors. The blooms are cupped and spaced by crenulated green leaves, studded with dewy air bubbles, which are pulled downward and gathered by the stems. The bouquet ends perfectly centered on a star-cut clear ground and is viewed through the six side facets and one top facet of an extremely rare green aventurine-over-white double overlay, all expertly encased in a layer of clear glass. “In the complicated encased overlay process, the casing, or overlay, had to be cooled in the annealing oven (lehr) before the windows could be cut. Then the weight had to be carefully reheated and covered with a further coating of clear glass, a multiple operation that must have taken days to complete” —Glass Paperweight of the New-York Historical Society, page 77. A similar example is pictured and discussed on page 90 and 152, figure 220, of Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows, as held in the Corning Museum of Glass collection. Diameter 2 15/16"
